Board of Directors Meeting Minutes – May 28, 2026

Meeting called to order 11:48 AM

Attendees:  Wayne, Mike, Keith, Dave F., Dave B., Rick S.(New Monday League Coordinator)

Approved April 2, 2026 Board minutes

  1. Rick S. Discuss ideas for retaining/recruiting players
    1. Outreach table at Marauder’s games
    2. Current players advertising communities where they live(flyers and BSS business cards)
    3. Exhibition game(s) at LECOM Field with city/county offices
    4. Award players for performance (best pitcher, most homeruns, etc.)
    5. Pay home plate umpires $20./day with funds raised by raffling businesses donated items.

The board agreed to allow Rick to research and develop concepts for the above ideas.

  1. Rick also initiated discussion on setting a minimum temperature for canceling games.  Currently, league coordinators communicate with managers to reach a consensus on what action to take, then LC leaves message on hot line.

Board members mentioned the difficulty in doing that because many factors like wind, humidity, cloud cover, etc.) affect what it feels like and those factors can vary significantly between the field and home locations.

For the time being, board agreed to continue with current process.

  1. Keith – Discuss 2027 draft and league start/finish dates
    1. Keith needed 2027 league milestone dates to plan sponsorships and shirt team shirt acquisition timeline. Keith may be evaluating other shirt suppliers than we’ve historically used.
    2. Keith and Jack will get together to discuss estimated costs (balls, supplies, fields and shirts) to set player and sponsor fees for 2027 League play.
  2. Dates for 2027 league play are:
    1. Registration – 10/23/26 – 11/13/26
    2. Competitive League Draft – 11/30/26 and 12/03/26
    3. Recreation League Draft – 12/07/26 and 12/10/26
    4. Leagues start play week of 01/04/27 and end week of 3/29/27
  1. Discussed how and when subs are selected in league play. No decision made, but will be considered at a later date.

Currently in the competitive league, following the games on Tuesday and Thursday, the LC contacts managers to ask if subs are needed, and if so, at what rating for the following week.  LC then communicates the order of selections, worst team first. Once a sub is selected, that manager informs the LC and other managers who they selected so the next manager needing a sub can proceed.

Depending on how many subs are needed, this process can continue for several days.

Keith presented the idea of managers and league coordinators meeting after the 2ndgame to select subs for the following week.  League coordinator would present the subs available and managers would make selections from bye team or sub list based on worst team making 1st selection and so-forth.  If additional subs are needed over the course of the week before the next games, the process would revert to our current process.  The benefit is that most of the selections would be made immediately after the games, eliminating the drawn-out process over the course of the week.

A down side is, the bye team manage for the current week would have to be at the fields when games finish or make arrangements to call in.  This same process would be used for Monday Rec League where the LC currently assigns subs based on team needs.  Thursday Rec League will continue using their current process where LC assigns subs.

  1. Dave F. – Discuss results of Rules Committee Meeting. The Board agreed to try proposed rule changes this summer/fall before finalizing rule changes for 2027 League play.

Following actions are:

  1. Amend Competitive and Rec rules 19 and 28 respectively to add when a runner stands off 1st or 3rd base for safety reasons, the runner cannot begin to move to retouch the base before the pitched ball makes contact with bat, plate or ground, same as if runner were on the base.
  2. There is not an ASA/USA rule or our own rule the prohibits a batter from carrying the bat to 1st Historically, we’ve been calling the batter out when he/she carries the bat beyond the white hash mark about 1/3rd of the way to 1st. That was an incorrect call.

There are no restrictions on carrying the bat unless bat is used to interfere with play.

  1. Batted ball hitting screen. During pick-up games this summer and fall we are going to experiment with calling a strike every time a batted ball hits the screen, meaning a batter can strike out by hitting the screen.  If adopted rules will be amended to reflect the change.
  2. Distance between bases is 65’. ASA/USA rules state distance of senior slow pitch is 70’.  Beginning in September pick-up games we will experiment with moving bases to 70’.  If adopted 70’ will be used league play.
  3. Amend Competitive and Rec rule 11 to reduce the time a pitcher has to deliver a pitch from the time they have the ball from 30 to 8 seconds.

ASA/USA allows just 5 seconds.

  1. Amend Competitive and Rec rule 12 and 20 respectively to remove the restriction of having to stop at 1st base on a batted ball.  The batter will be granted a courtesy runner at whatever base the batter reaches.
  2. Amend Competitive and Rec rule 16 and 14 respectively to change “a catcher must be touching any part of home plate” to a “fielder” must be touching any part of home plate.

  1. BSS is in good financial standing

  1. Next meeting is TBD
